Identifying Hard Drives

Dealing with a system with multiple SATA drives and having a drive failure after fsck, you’ll want to pull the appropriate drive. But how do you identify what drive is what? Use hdparm!

I have 2 separate drives in this particular system. sda is the failed drive, so wanted to if there was any specific info

hdparm -i /dev/sda
/dev/sda:

Model=ST3500630NS, FwRev=3BKH, SerialNo=9QG5ML4P
Config={ HardSect NotMFM HdSw>15uSec Fixed DTR>10Mbs RotSpdTol>.5% }
RawCHS=16383/16/63, TrkSize=0, SectSize=0, ECCbytes=4
BuffType=unknown, BuffSize=16384kB, MaxMultSect=16, MultSect=8
CurCHS=16383/16/63, CurSects=16514064, LBA=yes, LBAsects=976773168
IORDY=on/off, tPIO={min:240,w/IORDY:120}, tDMA={min:120,rec:120}
PIO modes: pio0 pio1 pio2 pio3 pio4
DMA modes: mdma0 mdma1 mdma2
UDMA modes: udma0 udma1 udma2 udma3 udma4 udma5 *udma6
AdvancedPM=yes: unknown setting WriteCache=enabled
Drive conforms to: Unspecified: ATA/ATAPI-1,2,3,4,5,6,7

* signifies the current active mode
hdparm -i /dev/sdb

/dev/sdb:

Model=WDC WD10EZEX-00WN4A0, FwRev=01.01A01, SerialNo=WD-WCC6Y7VHVAXT
Config={ HardSect NotMFM HdSw>15uSec SpinMotCtl Fixed DTR>5Mbs FmtGapReq }
RawCHS=16383/16/63, TrkSize=0, SectSize=0, ECCbytes=0
BuffType=unknown, BuffSize=unknown, MaxMultSect=16, MultSect=8
(maybe): CurCHS=16383/16/63, CurSects=16514064, LBA=yes, LBAsects=1953525168
IORDY=on/off, tPIO={min:120,w/IORDY:120}, tDMA={min:120,rec:120}
PIO modes: pio0 pio3 pio4
DMA modes: mdma0 mdma1 mdma2
UDMA modes: udma0 udma1 udma2 udma3 udma4 udma5 *udma6
AdvancedPM=no WriteCache=enabled
Drive conforms to: Reserved: ATA/ATAPI-1,2,3,4,5,6,7

* signifies the current active mode

Clearly, I can now see that sda is a Seagate drive and not the WesternDigital
